The Newsletter this year could not be composed without making reference to the Federal Government’s Sales Tax fiasco,and the effect that this further example of Govemmental incompetence has had on wines in the industry. The confusion and delay created a dilemma for the whole industry from Grape growers to Producers and wine wholesale and retail outlets Australia wide. Wine sales for many dropped by up to 30% during this period, and the overall average was about 10%. Cash flow froze as apparently did the brains of politicians and treasury bureaucrats, but who cared? Safely tucked away in their cocoons, insulated from contact with the real world and how it functions, and not in the least interested in wanting to find out about it anyway, what else could we expect? It was even revealed that figures from a survey of the industry in the late 70s and early 80s were used to substantiate the taxability of the industry!
