It seems that it is about time for some positive thinking “amidst the encircling gloom” of today. Particularly in the State of Victoria – the gloomiest. For vignerons there are uncertainties involving the future, both in the short and long term. There are also however some things that are certain. The growth of the vine is relentless, it needs tending and protecting, wine maturing in the cellar must be cared for continuously, bungs need to be tight, staves must not leak, casks must be full and regularly topped up. Wine matures and needs to be bottled and cellared and the longer that cellaring continues the better the wine becomes. If demand decreases then when demand returns, better wine will be waiting for the survivors. So let us drink to the survivors!
